Baptism

Baptizing in the Catholic tradition

Baptism is the first important step that a parent can take to begin the lifelong process of faith formation for their child. As you are planning for all of your child’s needs, don’t forget about Baptism. This is one of the first things to do after your child is born.

One parent needs to be a practicing Catholic and both parents need to agree to raise their child in the Catholic faith. Two sponsors are traditionally chosen as godparents and one of them must be a Catholic in good standing in their church, and be baptized and confirmed.

Parents interested in having a child baptized into our Catholic tradition are required to attend a Baptism Preparation class. The session is designed for new parents baptizing their first child or for parents that have not attended a session in more than four years. Sessions rotate throughout the year at the four parishes of Waukesha. Families are welcome to take the class at any parish that fits their schedule.

If you have special circumstances, please give us a call. Our Pastor will consider your situation and possibly be able to make special arrangements.

Next Steps…

  • Schedule Baptism and Preparation Class after the birth of your baby.

  • Baptism may be celebrated during Mass time with the priest officiating, in the presence of the congregation or outside of Mass on Saturday morning, with up to three other families. A deacon is most often the officiate at this ceremony.

  • Parents will be asked to attend a class if they have not attended one in the last 3-4 years. They are held at a different parish each month.
They are also held in Spanish at St. Joseph.

  • During Lent, Baptisms will be scheduled outside of Mass.
